1d Red (plate 40) from Edinburgh to Peebles, cancelled by a superb and virtually complete Edinburgh Type 6 Special, Balloon Cross. On the reverse top flap is an interesting handwritten note referring to 'drain? at the Tollbars in the 2nd district'. There is an Edinburgh date stamp for June 27th 1844 and a Peebles receiver for the same date. This therefore represents a penultimate day usage in Edinburgh. There are currently two known letters from Edinburgh dated 28 June cancelled with a Maltese cross and two dated 29 June cancelled with the 131 numeral of Edinburgh.
