1840 One Penny Black
Plate V
PI close to large margins all round, tied by an upright red Maltese Cross cancellation in an orange-vermilion shade,
to printed market report, dated 2 Jan. 1841 and with double ring Bristol d.s. on reverse; fine.
The entire shows another partial strike of the Maltese Cross at foot which indicates that in larger offices, mail was placed overlapping to speed the cancelling process.
Note the simple single line address - merely stating the recipient's name. At this time the population of Bristol was approx. 140,000 inhabitants. So it would seem that the addressee was well known or long established!
