An entire wrapper addressed to Inveraray bearing a 1d intense black from plate 1a letter E.K. tied by the black water based Maltese Cross of Rothesay and dated on reverse from the same ink pad for JN 11 1840 (year dates slug reversed). Postmasters were instructed to cancel adhesives with a red oil-based ink by the General Post Office in April 1840. The postmaster at Rothesay had his own unique recipe to cancel adhesives and date covers.
One of the earliest known covers with an adhesive cancelled by a black Maltese cross.
